New book on Afghanistan features IEEW
November 23rd, 2009 Posted by adminEvery day, we hear the news coming out of Afghanistan, but there is more to know about Afghanistan than what you read in the headlines. Caroline Firestone, a good friend and fellow U.S.-Afghan Women’s Council member, has just released her new coffee table book, Afghanistan in Transition. From cover to end, the book is simply beautiful and inspirational. The stories touch your heart, and the photos capture the spirit of the Afghan people, from the young to the old.
Experience life in Afghanistan through the power of words and pictures – hear from women, children, doctors, musicians, farmers, teachers, organizations (including the Institute!), and from our American soldiers who are helping to fight for Afghans’ freedom. To give you a sneak peak of just one of the many stories the book holds, the following excerpts were taken from a soldier’s letter to his father in September 2008:
“I really love what we are doing here, and there is a part of me that will truly be sad to leave this country when I redeploy.
Our provinces have not only gained access to schools, clinics, women’s shelters and wells, but also gained necessary road projects that increased the economic development and security.
We are turning former insurgents into supporters and the anti-government elements are naturally fighting back because they are losing territory.
I have looked in the eyes of and worked with people who shot at me and their groups are helping us now. It is fairly typical that the stories from the field do not make it to the tabloids because the men and women in the field are focused on the mission with a sense of patriotism and selflessness that does not include self promotion. The friends we have all made with the local nationals are inimitable.
Those who think it is taking too long have not looked at all the angels of this incredibly complex campaign. If only they could see how people are changing and how much we are giving to future generations.”
We have often said that what we do at the Institute and with PEACE THROUGH BUSINESS is an extension of what our American soldiers are doing in Afghanistan. We are

helping the Afghan people take small steps to help put their country on the road to economic recovery and freedom. Our mission is to help build that road through women business owners. Our work is indeed creating peace through business.
